Photoperiod, Timed Weaning and Reproductive Performance of Sows

چکیده

Background and Objectives: Strategies that enhance sow estrus detection and the correct time of mating/insemination are critical to reproductive and economic advancement of individual herds and of the swine industry. The domestic pig, whose ancestors were short-day seasonal breeders, still retains some the responsiveness to photoperiod (daylength) change (Claus & Weiler, 1985; Bassett, 1996). Long photoperiods (14-16h) can be associated with delayed puberty (Paterson & Pearce, 1990) prolonged weaning to estrus interval (WEI), variable duration of estrus and lowered fertility (Claus Weiler, 1985; Prunier et al., 1994). Part of the lowered fertility with longer photoperiods may be associated with variation in WEI and duration of estrus, which makes correct timing of insemination difficult. With time of ovulation occurring at about 70% of the estrus period (Soede & Kemp, 1997), ovulation would be occurring sooner in sows having a shorter estrus than in ones with longer heat periods. This, obviously, complicates breeding management strategies. If the WEI and duration of estrus can be improved or synchronized by manipulation of photoperiod and/or time of weaning, there is much greater likelihood of mating or inseminating at a time conducive to optimum fertility of the sow herd. The result would be higher pregnancy and farrowing rates, fewer non-productive days (NPD) and larger litter sizes arising from semen deposition coinciding with fr &

A comparison of an 8- versus 16-hour photoperiod during lactation on suckling frequency of the baby pig and maternal performance of the sow.

Seventeen crossbred sows were used in a lactation trial to compare the effects of a 16-h photoperiod with an 8-h photoperiod from d 107 of gestation to weaning at 28 d postpartum. Crossbred sows were used to compare the effects of 16-h (n = 8) and 8-h (n = 9) photoperiods on litter and maternal performance traits. Females were moved into two identical farrowing rooms under either 16- or 8-h pho...

Effect of Boar Presence on the Reproductive Performance of Sows

The success and efficiency of pig farming mainly depends on the reproductive performance of pigs. An experiment was conducted to study the effect of presence of the boar on the reproductive performance of sows, the feasibility and economics of rearing pigs of either sex together. Sixteen weaned Large White Yorkshire gilts, twelve weaned sows and two boars were randomly assigned to five groups a...

Photoperiod and heat stress influence on lactating sow performance and photoperiod effects on nursery pig performance.

Three experiments were conducted to evaluate sow and piglet productivity under extended photoperiod. In Exp. 1, 98 crossbred, lactating sows were housed in one of four treatments: thermoneutral air temperature (23.6 degrees C) in either (h of light:dark) 1:23 or 16:8 photoperiods, or heat stress (30.4 degrees C) in either 1:23 or 16:8 photoperiods. Heat stress reduced (P less than .05) sow feed...

Dietary protein restriction during lactation in primiparous sows with different live weights at farrowing: II. Consequences on reproductive performance and interactions with metabolic status.

The hypothesis that the restriction of dietary protein during lactation has different impacts on reproductive performance in light and heavy sows at farrowing was investigated, as well as the relationships between reproductive parameters and sow metabolic data. At farrowing, 38 primiparous sows were assigned to one of three groups: sows weighing 180 kg not restricted in dietary protein during l...

Effect of P.G. 600 on rebreeding performance in sows limit-fed during lactation.

The objective was to determine whether treatment with 400 IU PMSG and 200 IU hCG (P.G. 600; Intervet America, Inc., Millsboro, DE, USA) at weaning improved rebreeding performance in sows that were limit-fed during lactation. Crossbred sows were allowed ad libitum access to feed or were limited to 3.2 kg of feed/day during an 18-day lactation. At weaning, limit-fed sows received im treatment wit...
